Makoto Okazaki, a high school student, endures constant bullying and is forced to run errands for his classmates. One evening, his life takes a drastic turn when an unknown girl attacks him, sinking her teeth into his neck and drinking his blood. Afterward, she presents Makoto with a clear ultimatum: become a being like her or die. Waking up in a hospital following the assault, Makoto discovers he has become sensitive to bright light and that water can no longer satisfy his growing thirst.
