In a world distinct from that of Fate/stay night, the Greater Grail vanishes after the Third Holy Grail War in Fuyuki and remains concealed for many years. Around the early 2000s, when the Fifth Holy Grail War would have taken place, the organization Yggdmillennia reveals its theft of the Grail, secedes from the Mage's Association, and claims the artifact as its own. The Association sends fifty magi to retrieve it, but only one survives Black Lancer's assault. That lone survivor triggers the Greater Grail's backup protocol, which allows for the summoning of fourteen Servants. The Great Holy Grail War begins in Trifas, featuring two opposing factions: the Black Faction, composed of Yggdmillennia members, and the Red Faction, consisting of representatives from the Mage's Association along with one Church member. Additionally, the Grail summons Ruler to supervise the proceedings of the Holy Grail War.
