Tokyo Tarareba Musume

At 33, Rinko Kamata feels stuck in a rut. Her once-aspiring career as a screenwriter has lost momentum, her evenings are spent hopping between bars, and she is still single. While younger women around her fall in love and build relationships, Rinko and her close friends Kaori Yamakawa and Koyuki Torii question why their own lives turned out differently. One night while the three are drinking, they encounter a charming model named Key, who calls them out for constantly obsessing over "what if" possibilities. Tipsy and resolute, Rinko vows that she will no longer be unattached by the time the Tokyo Olympics arrive six years later. Tokyo Tarareba Girls follows Rinko and her friends as they navigate the search for romance in their thirties within a city that prizes youth, trends, and achievement.

Background

Tokyo Tarareba Musume was nominated for the ninth Manga Taisho Award in 2016 and placed ninth in the final ranking. The series was published digitally in English as Tokyo Tarareba Girls by Kodansha Comics USA from February 14, 2017, to November 21, 2017. The publisher's translation of the manga won the Eisner Award in the Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia category in 2019.
