In the peaceful surroundings of New-Tokyo 3, high schooler Shinji Ikari goes about his daily life surrounded by his familiar circle of friends: his headstrong childhood companion Asuka Langley Souryuu, the easygoing pair Touji Suzuhara and Kensuke Aida, the diligent Hikari Horaki, and the mysterious Kaworu Nagisa. This steady rhythm is upset when the upbeat new transfer student Rei Ayanami appears, sparking a tangle of romantic feelings and honest confessions. Yet these personal upheavals pale as the United Nations agency NERV calls them in for classified experiments. As NERV's hold over the students tightens, Shinji and his friends are swept into an inevitable journey, leaving their calm school days behind. This alternate retelling of a well-known anime series, Shinseiki Evangelion: Koutetsu no Girlfriend 2nd, recasts these figures as ordinary pupils in a world that is profoundly unlike the one seen in Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Shinseiki Evangelion: Koutetsu no Girlfriend 2nd is based on Gainax's . While the first four volumes are an adaptation of the game, the final two are exclusive stories based on the characters in the game. The series was published in English as Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days by ADV Manga from May 16, 2006 to August 21, 2007.
