At age five, Lotti and six-year-old Johnny made a promise to one another that they would one day attend the Royal Music Academy together. However, their dream was cut short when their homeland was split into two separate nations—East and West—under opposing governments, forcing the two friends apart. Years later, Lotti defied her parents' wishes and made her way to the Academy on her own. There, she crossed paths with George, a rebellious troublemaker. Her hopes of enrollment seemed doomed when she failed the entrance examinations and was on the verge of being turned away—until the Student Body President, Carl, stepped in and informed the headmaster that Lotti was, in fact, his fiancée. The Academy itself mirrored the divided nation, with its student body split into East and West wings based on their region of origin. To Lotti's utter shock, Carl presided over the West wing as its Student Body President—and George held the same position for the East wing!
