Pearl Hunting

山女のはらわた

Somewhere in the vast reaches of China, Xiaodan and his friend An—who had once moved to this village—go pearl hunting as is their custom. During a pause in their labors, Yasu begins to share a fairy tale from his distant homeland, starting with how, in his childhood, Kotan had envisioned pearls as "mermaid tears." It carries a nostalgic quality, yet something about it feels faintly disturbing. A rising star whose work is primarily known overseas makes his first appearance in Japan.
