Cloud’s childhood friend, Tifa Lockhart, wrestles with guilt over the lives that were lost and tries to maintain their connection, though memories of their fallen allies increasingly put strain on their relationship. Meanwhile, Barret Wallace and Red XIII search for a new direction now that Sephiroth is no longer a danger, while Yuffie Kisaragi goes back to her homeland of Wutai to help her people deal with the emerging illness called Geostigma. Deep within the Lifestream, the planet's collective spiritual energy, Sephiroth's vengeful consciousness lingers, festering with hatred toward Cloud and all of humanity. As the spirit of someone precious to Cloud watches Sephiroth’s growing fury, the sinister scheme for revenge inches ever closer to being realized.
