Big X
ビッグX
As World War II was nearing its end, it is known that the Nazis were developing several non-traditional armaments, including the V-2 rocket and the enormous Maus tank. They also conceived a rocket-powered fighter plane, which Japan, their ally, attempted to finish based on German research—though this project never entered service. Drawing from these actual events, Osamu Tezuka created the story of a fictional secret weapon named "Big X," a joint project between Japan and Germany. The manga "Big X" was later turned into a successful TV show, with both iterations becoming highly popular. However, Tezuka himself was uneasy about his main character, Akira Asagumo, who frequently displayed an overly idealistic view of justice. Despite the author's own opinions, the work became a notable satirical manga, sharply portraying the harsh truths of warfare. Only someone who had lived through the war, like Tezuka, could have crafted such a strong and moving piece.
