The story takes place in 1925. Koume and Akiko, both 14 and attending high school in Japan, face discouragement from a baseball player who thinks women should focus on domestic chores rather than academics. Determined to prove him wrong, they decide to form a baseball team. During this time period, even running was considered unladylike, and baseball was seen as a sport for men. The obstacles they encounter include gathering enough players, getting permission from their parents, and learning how to play the game properly.
