This manga is an adaptation of "Foundation" by Isaac Asimov, a classic science fiction novel and the first published book in the Foundation series. The tale opens with Gaal Dornick, a young mathematician, arriving on Trantor, the capital planet of a galactic empire that has reigned for 12,000 years, after being invited there by Hari Seldon. Seldon is a mathematician who created the science of psychohistory, a discipline that weaves together history, sociology, and statistics in order to calculate how the future will unfold for large populations. Much to Gaal's surprise, Gaal and Hari Seldon are arrested for treason almost as soon as Gaal steps foot on the planet! Seldon has predicted that the Empire will come crashing down in 500 years, after which humanity will suffer through a dark age spanning 30,000 years. His claim is that while nothing can halt the Empire's deterioration, his expertise in psychohistory can shorten the ensuing dark age to a mere 1,000 years. The Empire's rulers are far from delighted by these tidings, and they respond by exiling Seldon, Gaal, and all the others involved to the distant planet of Terminus. In this manner, the Foundation is born, an institution that must persist through the Empire's final days and see Seldon's plan through, guiding humanity onto the most favorable path possible.
