In the Asakusa district of Tokyo, a quiet mansion called Ayakashi-sou stands. Though large, it is home only to a sixteen-year-old girl. The mansion gets its name from the ayakashi—Japanese spirits and ghosts—that live there. Among them are Kuuko, a playful fox girl who loves pranks, and Yukime, a serene snow-woman. Also present is Kii, a childlike Zashikiwarashi who protects the building. Later, a newly formed cat youkai named Nene, with no home of her own, joins them. The mansion's owner, Mahoro Miyatsuka, inherited it from her late grandmother because of her unique ability to see and talk to spirits. While this gift lets her connect with the ayakashi, it also makes her classmates wary of her habit of speaking to unseen beings. Still, Mahoro finds joy in caring for her spectral friends as they enjoy everyday activities like watching fireworks, playing games, and cherishing each day.
