Junjou Romantica intertwines the narratives of three couples as they experience their distinct romantic paths. In the primary storyline, university exam candidate Misaki Takahashi and his tutor, famous novelist Akihiko Usami, have a strained relationship. Their connection exists only because of Takahiro, Misaki’s cherished older brother and Usami’s close friend. Misaki grows more suspicious of Usami’s motives regarding Takahiro when he finds a provocative boys-love novel written by Usami, with characters resembling both men. After a heated argument, they agree to a temporary truce. This calm breaks when Takahiro visits with his fiancée. Despite the happy occasion, Misaki feels an unexpected wave of jealousy as Usami calmly offers his congratulations. The second story, Junjou Egoist, centers on Hiroki Kamijou, who is nursing a broken heart and a hangover when he encounters Nowaki Kusama. After nearly being hit by Nowaki’s toy rocket, Nowaki approaches Hiroki and insists on becoming his student for a high school equivalency exam. When Hiroki’s former crush appears, Nowaki boldly declares his feelings for Hiroki, triggering a whirlwind of emotions. Can Hiroki’s pride allow him to accept this new affection? Lastly, Junjou Terrorist introduces Shinobu Takatsuki, who believes fate guided him to You Miyagi, the man who once rescued him from a mugging. Their relationship has been complicated by Miyagi marrying Shinobu’s older sister, but Miyagi’s recent divorce seems to give Shinobu the chance he has long awaited. Despite Miyagi’s attempts to discourage Shinobu, who ignores their significant age gap and past complications, Shinobu remains determined to pursue their "destined love."

Background

Junjou Romantica's English volumes 10 and 12 ranked on the New York Time's Best Seller for July 11, 2009 and September 10, 2010 respectively. The series has expanded into several drama CDs, a light novel adaptation, multiple spin-off series, and a three-season anime adaptation. On June 22, 2015, it was announced in Shungiku Nakamura's official twitter that the manga has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide. The series was previously serialized in CIEL TrèsTrès, but moved to Emerald on August 30, 2014 when the magazine went defunct. Junjou Romantica was published in English by Tokyopop under its Blu Manga imprint from October 10, 2006 to August 31, 2010. Because of Tokyopop's closure, only 12 volumes were released. It has also been published in Spanish by Ivrea España since February 13, 2015.
