Arata Kangatari

In "Arata: The Legend," Arata is the reluctant successor of the Hime Clan, a matriarchal society of gods living alongside humans. To stay safe, he constantly conceals his real gender by dressing as a girl. After a sudden shift sends him into the modern world and swaps bodies with a human boy named Arata Hinohara, it becomes unclear which Arata has the tougher lot. Because Hinohara strongly resembles the deity, he starts drawing unwanted attention from those who want him dead. Struggling to survive in this strange and dangerous realm full of relentless enemies, Arata wonders who will come to his rescue. Clearly, being Arata comes with immense hardships.

Background

Arata Kangatari was published in English as Arata: The Legend by VIZ Media under the Shonen Sunday imprint from March 9, 2010 to August 9, 2016. As a result of changes imposed by the mangaka's former editor in early volumes of this series, which were at odds with her initial plans for the story, a remastered version was started and the series was paused after volume 24 in order to allow for the remastered version to catch up. However, as the story in the remastered version had diverged significantly by volume 8, in 2021 it was decided to discontinue the Shounen Sunday version and to continue the story only in the remastered version.
