Sixteen-year-old Kumiko is the eldest of three siblings, and her mother has always been something of a free-spirited wild child. When Kumiko gets home from school one day, she discovers her mother locked in a passionate embrace with a man—and things only get more bewildering when her brothers and sister arrive, and their mother announces she has just married him. All three kids are left stunned by the sudden turn of events, but the shock takes a far more tragic twist that same evening when their mother is killed in an accident. With the family now in turmoil, Kumiko decides to step up and take charge. Yet their new stepfather insists on offering his help, which poses a problem—because Kumiko can't stand the man.
