Bokura no Shikisai

Taking place in modern-day suburban Japan, *Our Colors* follows Sora Itoda, a sixteen-year-old aspiring painter who perceives his surroundings through synesthetic shades of blue and red, shaped by the emotional ups and downs of adolescence. He longs to live openly as a gay young man during his high school years, but such honesty remains unacceptable in Japanese society. His closest friend since childhood is Nao, a young woman whom everyone assumes to be—or expects to become—his girlfriend. Going along with that assumption would be the simplest path; she is aware of his sexuality but also understands how difficult it is to embrace one's true self under their circumstances. Sora's life takes a dramatic turn when he encounters Mr. Amamiya, a middle-aged man who runs a neighborhood coffee shop and lives his life as a gay man without apology. The two form a mentor-student bond, with Sora revealing his secret to him and accepting the task of painting a mural on the shop's walls. Mr. Amamiya offers him guidance—strictly platonic—on navigating his identity. The road ahead, however, is far from smooth. Mr. Amamiya sacrificed a great deal to attain his own freedom, and when someone from his past reappears without warning, it serves as a stark reminder of just how messy life can become.
