When she checks her reflection, she finds two shimeji mushrooms growing on her head, which only add to her social struggles and the bullying she endured in middle school. Because of this, she remains withdrawn as she enters high school. One day while reading alone, Shijima is approached by Majime Yamashita, an eccentric classmate who has a fried egg on her head. Despite Shijima's initial hesitation, Majime's persistent efforts to become friends eventually succeed, and she earns the nickname "Shimeji." Together, they explore the oddities and wonders of high school life, with Shijima slowly becoming more involved thanks to her new friend.
