In the year 2301, over a century and a half after the terraforming of Aqua—once known as Mars—began, the planet is now almost entirely covered in water. These gondolas are piloted by skilled and knowledgeable women called Undines, who serve as tour guides throughout Neo-Venezia. Akari Mizunashi, a native of Earth, arrives in the city driven by her ambition to become an Undine and begins her training at the Aria Company. Shortly after her arrival, she meets her mentor Alicia Florence, a plump cat named Aria Pokoteng, and Aika S. Granzchesta, an apprentice from the rival Himeya Company. With her new friends, Akari pursues her goal of mastering the role of an Undine while savoring the enchanting experiences that Neo-Venezia has to offer. Aqua was released in English by Tokyopop from October 9, 2007 to February 5, 2008. The series has been published in French by Kami from December 6, 2006 to March 7, 2007; in German by Tokyopop from September 2006 to January 2007; in Italian by Star Comics; in Spanish by Editorial Ivrea from March 30, 2006 to May 27, 2006. A drama CD adapting the events of the manga was released by Frontier Works on September 22, 2005.
