PIPPI, a humanoid computer designed to predict earthquakes, determines that a global-scale cataclysm will take place in eight years. Although the computer also announces that the risk of human extinction can be averted by following a specific series of steps, the required actions are so far outside the norm that people are thrown into chaos and doubt.
