Set in the late Victorian period, the narrative centers on the existence of beastkin—humans born with animal ears and tails. These individuals are raised under strict government oversight and trained to serve human masters. Mel, a clumsy and timid beastkin, aspires to find a master but struggles to achieve this goal due to her shortcomings. Mel is eventually assigned to a reclusive young writer living in a large mansion, along with the household maid, Colette. Initially indifferent to his new servant, the master gradually develops a fondness for Mel as they come to understand each other, eventually forming a close, almost family-like bond over time.
