Dr. Araki, a Hiroshima survivor who lost his parents in the atomic blast, later moved to Nevada to work on Gamma bomb tests for the U.S. government. During a countdown, he spotted teenager Ricky Tenda in the blast zone. Leaving the safety of his bunker to rescue Ricky, Araki told his assistant Igor to continue the count, not knowing Igor was a Russian spy. The count proceeded, and although Araki got Ricky to safety, he himself was caught in the explosion and transformed into the rampaging monster called the Hulk.
