The Count of Monte Cristo
モンテ・クリスト伯爵
Monte Cristo Hakushaku
Returning to Marseille, France, Edmond Dantès readies himself to wed his fiancée. He carries a secret letter from Emperor Napoleon, believing his life is ideal after his exhausting voyage. Yet his joy does not last; during the wedding, the police abruptly intervene and arrest him without just cause. Dantès demands an explanation and discovers that his letter from Napoleon is treated as proof of a crime. Though Lord Villefort, the prosecutor, destroys the letter and vows to dismiss the charges, Dantès is wrongfully imprisoned in the inescapable Château d'If, a fortress meant for severe political offenders. After nearly two years locked away, Dantès abandons all hope of ever regaining freedom. His spirits rise, however, when he meets Abbé Faria, another inmate who has dug a tunnel linking their cells. Inspired by this new companion, Dantès asks Faria to teach him everything he knows. Years go by, and armed with fresh knowledge and resolve, Dantès eventually flees into the sea. Returning to Marseille months later, Dantès is now unrecognizable, rich, powerful, and driven by a thirst for revenge. He sets out to ruin those who betrayed him.
