In "Happy House," Okazaki examines the shifting social landscape of Japan during the late 1960s economic boom, with a focus on women's rising workforce participation. By the mid-1970s, many women continued their careers even after marriage or childbirth, defying conventional expectations and contributing to an increase in divorces. The narrative follows a thirteen-year-old girl whose father works as a TV director and mother as an actress, both frequently too occupied to pay attention to their children. As she faces the possibility of her parents' divorce, she realizes that neither can offer the happiness she desires. Instead of choosing to live with one of them, she longs to live on her own and earn her own money to break free from her circumstances.
