Chiisakobee

ちいさこべえ

Chiisakobee presents a modern retelling of Yamamoto Shuguro's historical novel, relocating the original Edo period setting to the present day. Shigeji, a young carpenter who lost both his parents and his father's construction firm, Daitome, in a fire, is resolved to restore the company. Guided by his father Tomezoh's conviction that "humanity and willpower are what truly matter," Shigeji takes in Ritsu, a person without a place to go, as an apprentice at Daitome. Moreover, children from an orphanage who have also lost their home arrive at Daitome. The story follows the bearded young carpenter's efforts to continue his family legacy through acts of human kindness.

Background

Chiisakobee won the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival Excellence Award in 2013. The series was published in French by Le Lezard Noir from October 2, 2015, to November 17, 2016; in Spanish by ECC Ediciones from April 29, 2016, to July 29, 2016; and in Italian by J-POP from February 28, 2018, to August 29, 2018.
