The specter of war looms over the small nation of Oatland. Maurice, a young painter, comes into possession of a gnome—a recently developed creature capable of learning to perform tasks repeatedly after being shown once. Impressed by its abilities, Maurice grows fond of his gnome. However, other painters oppose the introduction of gnomes, calling for their prohibition and destruction on the grounds that they threaten livelihoods. Maurice strives to change their minds and protect the gnomes, believing they can be used for good, but he struggles to find a way for gnomes and painters to coexist peacefully.
