For thirteen years, Mashiro Kamitsuka has been confined to a single room, entrusted with the care of weakened divine beings that reside within her hair. As a shrine maiden of the Kamitsuka clan, her duty is to maintain her long tresses and offer refuge to these diminished gods. Despite her prolonged seclusion, none of the deities have departed from her hair. One day, a mysterious voice entices her to step outside, where her relatives attempt to coax her back indoors. Resisting their efforts, Mashiro declares her wish aloud, summoning the fire deity Hinokagutsuchi, whom she calls "Hinokagu." With the aid of Hinokagu's abilities and her devoted attendant Hayate, Mashiro escapes the family compound and finds shelter in an abandoned shrine. Although Mashiro, Hayate, and Hinokagu strive for a peaceful existence, the Kamitsuka clan persists in pursuing them, intensifying their punishments. Yet this newfound freedom brings unexpected advantages. By severing ties with her family, Mashiro begins to uncover the true nature of her role as a shrine maiden, the hidden secrets of her lineage, and the troubled past of the deity who transformed her life.
