Sesame Street
せさみすとりーと
Matsumoto Izumi's Sesame Street takes a more realistic approach than his earlier work, Whimsical Orange Road. There are no characters with special abilities, no enigmatic individuals with shadowy histories, and no outlandish storylines. In many respects, Sesame Street is actually more whimsical than Orange Road. This firm commitment to reality is deliberate. The author labels his creation a "Downtown Comedy." The story is set in central Tokyo, one of Japan's most densely populated cities. Many of its plots are drawn from everyday issues common in Japan. For instance, half of the second volume revolves around a "Jiageya" who swindles a family out of their home. "Jiageya" literally means "Land Snatcher," a pejorative term for land speculators who defraud people of their property and reap enormous profits from the overheated real estate market.
