Set against the backdrop of the Qing dynasty under Emperor Qianlong's rule (1735–1796), this tale centers on the Red Flower Society—a clandestine group committed to bringing down the Qing regime—and its interactions with a Muslim community in China's northwestern frontier. The "book" in the title denotes a Qur'an taken from that tribe, whereas the "sword" refers to a blade gifted to the main character, Chen Jialuo, by his first love, Huoqingtong. Historical figures, among them the Qianlong Emperor, Zhaohui (兆惠), Heshen, Zheng Xie, and Fuk'anggan, either appear within the narrative or are cited by name. One of the story's leading ladies, Princess Fragrance, takes loose inspiration from the Qianlong Emperor's Fragrant Concubine. Marking Jin Yong's literary debut, this work quickly elevated him to prominence as a fresh voice in the wuxia genre. The novel has also been published under the alternate titles Book and Sword: Gratitude and Revenge and The Romance of the Book and Sword.
