In 1912, a young lady approaches the elderly Nagakura Shinpachi, hoping to learn the genuine account of the Shinsengumi's Demon, Vice Commander Hijikata Toshizou. Hijikata's story starts in 1859, when he is an impulsive young man refining his swordsmanship while selling his family's medicine. Driven by a craving for intense combat, Hijikata meets others who will later come together as the Shinsengumi. His course is first changed by Kondo Isami, a warrior whose fighting prowess exceeds Hijikata's own.
