Red Colored Elegy
赤色エレジー
Sekishoku Elegy
Seiichi Hayashi created Red Colored Elegy between 1970 and 1971, following a politically turbulent and culturally vibrant decade that held promise but ultimately fell short of delivering new possibilities. Through minimalist linework and visual techniques borrowed from animation and cinema, this poetic masterpiece beautifully captures the quiet, melancholic lives of a young couple struggling to get by. Detached from the political movements of their era, Ichiro and Sachiko long for something better, but they are not revolutionaries; they spend their free time drinking, smoking, daydreaming, and sleeping—together and occasionally with others. While Ichiro tries to earn a living through his comics, Sachiko's parents are keen to arrange a marriage for her, yet Ichiro shows little interest. In both their relationship and their work, Ichiro and Sachiko fail to say what needs to be said, and like any couple, sometimes say things to each other they don't mean, ultimately communicating as much through body language and what is left unspoken as through words. Red Colored Elegy draws equally from underground Japanese comics of the time and the French Nouvelle Vague, with cultural references spanning James Dean to Ken Takakura. Its impact in Japan was so significant that Morio Agata, a prominent Japanese folk musician and singer-songwriter, debuted with a love song written and named after it. "I wanted to live like Sachiko and Ichiro; to have aspirations even while living stoically and humbly." —Morio Agata
