Despite the war ending, fighter jets continued to dominate the skies in Akatsuki Iono's world. He gave little thought to why that was, instead focusing on his ordinary school life and daily routine. Akatsuki possessed keener eyesight and faster reflexes than most people, which mainly helped him win street brawls. His adoptive brother, Seibu Tsubasa—whom he had met five years earlier when both were nine—had become a brilliant scholar, earning his doctorate at that same age and now teaching Akatsuki's middle school class. Everything changed for Akatsuki when he learned about his Kigan, or machine eyes—a rare ability granted to only a select few around the world, letting the body exceed its ordinary limits. With Kigan, one can perceive nearly a full 360-degree field, process all visual data instantly, and make decisions far faster than the average person. As a result, Akatsuki became a pilot for the Warbird jets he often saw in the sky, turning into a covert military asset as tensions rose toward another world war.
