In the kingdom of Earlswald, a revolution brings about the downfall of the tyrannical king, his queen, and their heir. Cayden, the leader of the uprising, takes the throne and makes his close friend Eli—a man of low birth—a duke. Despite his heroic feats, Eli is seen as a ruthless monster, feared by both allies and enemies. A noble who once backed the former monarch is forced to give his eldest daughter in marriage to Eli. Instead, he sends a servant named Edna, claiming she is his illegitimate child. At first, their marriage is awkward, but Eli grows fascinated by Edna's elegant behavior and fiery nature. Meanwhile, Edna discovers sides of her husband beyond his terrifying reputation. Still, she must keep up her disguise; if Eli learns her true origins and her genuine worry for the kingdom, she could lose not only her marriage but also her life.
