In Japan many centuries ago, the nation was in upheaval due to rebellions against the ruling government. The situation was particularly dire in Kyoto, the capital, where revolutionary forces were rapidly growing stronger. The Shinsengumi bore the responsibility of halting this chaos and restoring order to the city. Renowned commanders including Okita, Hijikata, and Kondo had to labor relentlessly, cutting down countless opponents in the effort to bring peace back to Kyoto.
