Twenty years prior, a lethal cloud of toxic gas rose from a neighboring swamp, wiping out thousands in the village of Hinamizawa. In the wake of the devastating "Great Hinamizawa Disaster," the settlement has been mostly abandoned and shunned. But on a single fateful night, five strangers converge in this forsaken mountain hamlet. In Yoigoshi-hen—a hypothetical offshoot of Tsumihoroboshi-hen—former resident Mion Sonozaki journeys to the crumbling Furude Shrine in Hinamizawa, seeking refuge from the rain. Along the way, she encounters Akira Otobe, who is looking for his lost companions. Entering the shrine, they discover others already gathered there, all in search of safety. However, when one of their group is killed, suspicion mounts, and some begin to point fingers at Mion—given that she was supposedly killed during the Great Hinamizawa Disaster two decades earlier.
