In the 22nd century, after the devastation wrought by the Third World War (2099–2126)—a conflict fought without nuclear weapons—Earth's terrain has been fundamentally transformed. Traditional powers such as England, France, and China still exist but struggle to regain their former influence. In the ensuing turmoil, new factions arise, including the Sacred Republique of Mumna and the Poseidon Organization. Against this bleak backdrop, Deunan Knute and Briareos Hecatonchires, both former L.A. SWAT operatives, are eking out an existence in a ruined city. A young woman named Hitomi approaches them and leads them to Olympus, a utopian metropolis that has become the world's leading power, shaping global politics, economics, and military affairs. Upon arriving in Olympus, Deunan and Briareos are enlisted into the ESWAT (Extra Special Weapons And Tactics), an elite force tasked with protecting the city from terrorism and advancing its international interests. As they settle into their new surroundings, the protagonists encounter a range of individuals and factions entangled in complex global conspiracies aimed at destabilizing Olympus.
