Black★Rock Shooter: Innocent Soul

In the intermediary world of Hazama, which serves as a bridge between Heaven and Earth, prideful human souls are held in purgatory. These self-centered spirits create various "phantoms," from lonely schoolhouses to enormous cities, through which they remain trapped in their delusions. Other wandering souls are lured into these phantoms and become stuck, doomed to be absorbed into the vain spirit's ego. Rock fights as a warrior in the Black Shooter army, working alongside Ron, a sentient weapon that can change shape and looks like a serpent. Their goal is to enter these phantoms, free the souls imprisoned at their cores, and bring them to a place where purification can happen, allowing them to eventually ascend to Heaven. However, their mission is obstructed by Dead—a mysterious Black Shooter who refuses to help sinners find redemption and instead devours and annihilates their souls.

Background

Black★Rock Shooter: Innocent Soul was serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace magazine between July 2011 and June 2012. Concurrently, it was collected into three volumes and published between November 2011 and June 2012. Black★Rock Shooter started out as an original character posted online by illustrator Ryohei Fuke, depicted as a black-haired girl with one burning blue eye and a powerful cannon on her arm. Inspired, Ryo of the Japanese pop band Supercell created a song based on the character using the popular Vocaloid software. The two collaborated on a music video to accompany the song, which was subsequently posted online, garnering many views.
