Set in the Heian era, the story follows Abe no Masahiro, grandson of the legendary onmyōji Abe no Seimei. Although Seimei passed his knowledge to Masahiro, the young man has lost his sixth sense and can no longer perceive spirits. He constantly resents living in his grandfather's shadow. One day, however, Masahiro encounters a fox-like creature he names Mokkun, who helps him unlock his true latent abilities after a battle with a demon. Mokkun is actually Toda, who prefers to be called Guren—one of the twelve shikigami known as the Shinshō, who swore loyalty to Seimei and now aids Masahiro in his quest to surpass his grandfather. Achieving that dream will not be easy. Masahiro must not only convince the other Shinshō that he is Seimei's rightful successor but also grow his power to halt demons emerging from China, other regions of Japan, and the Underworld, as well as rival onmyōji who seek to destroy the country. He must also fulfill his promise to protect Princess Akiko of the Fujiwara clan.
