Summary
Sailor Cosmos is a pivotal figure in the Stars arc of the Sailor Moon manga, serving as the true form of Chibi Chibi, a character with different origins in the anime adaptation. Following the demise of Sailor Galaxia, Chibi Chibi unveils her actual identity to Sailor Moon. Her personal timeline, as recounted to the Sailor Quartet, is grim: Sailor Chaos wages war across the universe, resulting in the total annihilation of everything and everyone Sailor Cosmos knows, leaving no possibility for recovery even if the conflict concludes. Overcome by fear and helplessness, she abandons this future and travels back in time to eliminate Chaos before it can manifest its terrifying Senshi form. To achieve this, she believes the Galaxy Cauldron must be destroyed as well. Disguised as Chibi Chibi, she attempts to steer Eternal Sailor Moon toward this goal. Although Eternal Sailor Moon is resolute in saving the Cauldron and pursues a different path, her power and courage inspire hope in Sailor Cosmos. She explains that the Eternal Sailor Moon who saved the galaxy is, in reality, the authentic form of Sailor Cosmos, and that she will only truly embody this title once she possesses that same strength and bravery. The fate of Sailor Cosmos after dispatching the Sailor Quartet to the future in Act 52 remains unspecified. Inspired by Sailor Moon’s resilience, she declares her intention to return to her own timeline to resume her battle and reclaim the mantle she forfeited through cowardice. Her true nature is ambiguous, with her appearances in Acts 51 and 52 raising more questions than answers. While Sailor Ceres identifies her as the ultimate future form of Sailor Moon, it is unclear if she is the future self of the current Sailor Moon, a reincarnation, a descendant, or an alternate version from a divergent timeline. Naoko Takeuchi has suggested that Cosmos’s identity was meant to remain ambiguous for all characters, including herself. In the manga’s final act, Sailor Cosmos emerges from a future nearly wiped out by Chaos. After enduring ages of conflict, she despairs and flees to the past as infant ChibiChibi to urge Eternal Sailor Moon to defeat Chaos while she has the opportunity. Initially, she urges the destruction of the Galaxy Cauldron to ensure Chaos’s eradication, but Sailor Moon objects, noting that this would prevent new stars from being born and strip the Galaxy of its future. By choosing to sacrifice herself to the Cauldron, Sailor Moon demonstrates the right decision, reminding Cosmos of the courage she must summon. Renewed with hope, she returns to the future. The manga implies she is Sailor Moon’s ultimate form, a fact confirmed by Takeuchi in a magazine interview. This has sparked various theories within the fandom. Although Sailor Cosmos never appears in the anime, the silhouette of ChibiChibi’s adult form, the "Light of Hope," closely resembles her, and Takeuchi has expressed regret that the character was not included in the animated series.
