Summary
Guren is a kunoichi who serves as the female leader of Orochimaru’s subordinates during the second Naruto Shippūden filler arc. She wields the unique Crystal Release jutsu, a power that allows her to summon and manipulate crystals in various ways, such as creating crushing walls or shuriken. Her abilities are so distinct that even Kakashi’s Sharingan cannot copy them. It is noted that she can crystallize moisture from the air, granting her an infinite supply of weapons, and her crystal’s density is so high that Wood Release cannot penetrate it. In desperate situations, she can convert life energy into extra chakra to fight at full strength for a short time. Her taijutsu is also formidable, allowing her to fight on equal footing with Kakashi, dodge Naruto’s Rasengan, and combat Lee and Tenten simultaneously. She is a keen observer who can detect enemies and identify weaknesses in opponents. As a child, Guren lived in a small village where she was ostracized for her unique powers. Orochimaru destroyed her village single-handedly and, intrigued by her abilities, offered her a place by his side. Driven by envy of his power, she accepted and quickly became one of his most powerful and loyal subordinates. She was once considered as a potential vessel for Orochimaru, a role eventually given to Kimimaro and then Sasuke Uchiha, before Gen’yumaru was chosen when Sasuke defected. Feeling discarded, Guren isolated herself. It was later revealed that she was the one who killed Yūkimaru’s mother. Guren initially appears mysterious, remorseless, and sadistic, showing ecstasy at the prospect of prisoners fighting to the death. She is vain, admiring her reflection in the Jade Crystal Mirror technique, and proud, feeling shame when Naruto offers to carry her. Her loyalty to Orochimaru is obsessive, and she has a hostile relationship with Kabuto, often trading insults with him. However, her bond with Yūkimaru changes her. After caring for him during an illness, she develops a friendship with him, crystallizing a flower for him so it would never wither. When she learns that Yūkimaru’s mother died while searching for a red camellia, Guren finds a patch and brings him one. Contact with Yūkimaru creates conflicting emotions for Guren. While she still desires Orochimaru’s acceptance, she cannot let go of her bond with Yūkimaru, protecting him even from Kabuto. Her worldview shifts further after a confrontation with Naruto, who bluntly describes Orochimaru as horrible and selfish. Upon realizing she killed Yūkimaru’s mother, Guren is consumed by guilt and a desire for repentance. She wishes to become a surrogate mother to the boy, replacing the mother she killed. This shift leads her to protect Naruto as well, offering to die for him if he watches over Yūkimaru. She begins to doubt her loyalty to Orochimaru due to the pain he has caused Yūkimaru and herself. During the Three-Tails Arrival arc, Kabuto fetches Guren to aid Orochimaru’s plan. She attacks Kabuto to test his worthiness and forms a team with prisoners: Rinji, Gozu, Kigiri, Kihō, and Nurari. Disapproving of Sasuke’s status as a vessel, Guren is offered the chance to replace him if she proves herself. After Yūkimaru falls ill again, she cares for him and realizes they share the pain of having no one at a young age. She leaves Yūkimaru at the hideout to handle Team Kurenai, encasing Hinata in crystal as a hostage. When Team Yamato breaks through her traps, she retreats to plan with Kabuto. Kabuto, Guren, and her team go to a lake to awaken the Three-Tails. Guren tries to restrain the beast but is overpowered, using her remaining chakra to protect Yūkimaru. After awakening in Yūkimaru’s care, she intercepts Naruto. During a scuffle, she hears Naruto’s perspective on Orochimaru, causing her to question her path. When facing the Leaf Ninja again, her Crystal Release is neutralized by Shino’s insects. Gozu sacrifices himself to let her escape, but Naruto declares his determination to take Yūkimaru. Guren initially assumes the Leaf Village wants Yūkimaru to control the Three-Tails. Upon returning to the hideout, Yūkimaru plays a melody on a grass whistle that triggers Guren’s memory: she realizes she killed his mother. Horrified, she begs Kabuto to stop using Yūkimaru, offering to stop the Leaf Ninja from sealing the Three-Tails. With Rinji’s help, she stops the seal, but the Three-Tails turns on her. Yūkimaru saves her, deepening her guilt. She and Naruto fight the beast together, but they are swallowed whole. Inside the beast, Naruto treats her wounds despite their arguments. Guren argues that the Leaf Village is no better than Orochimaru in seeking demons, but Naruto reveals he is the Nine-Tails’ Jinchūriki and refuses to use its power for fear of hurting others. Seeing his genuine concern, Guren admits her role in Yūkimaru’s loneliness and agrees that he belongs with Naruto. They escape the beast to find Yūkimaru being used again. Naruto convinces Guren to reveal the truth to him. They arrive just as Rinji, disguised by Kabuto’s reincarnation jutsu, attempts to force a drug on Yūkimaru. Yūkimaru forgives Guren, and she battles Rinji to protect him. Using her Crimson Fruit jutsu, she tries to trap Rinji, but his bats shatter the crystal. With her hands busy holding Rinji’s arms to prevent jutsu use, she crystallizes herself and Rinji, falling into the water below. Gozu saves her, and she reunites with Yūkimaru, leaving together.
