Summary
Born on August 26, 1754, André was the grandson of Oscar’s nanny and her close friend. In their youth, he and Oscar trained together in fencing and horsemanship, but as they matured, the widening class divide separated them when Oscar joined the Dauphine's guard. Historian Helen McCarthy has characterized him as a "true working-class hero."
