Summary

Zetsu is instantly recognizable by the large, Venus flytrap-like appendages that cover his head and upper body, giving him a distinct plant-like appearance. When these extensions part to reveal his face, it becomes clear that his body is divided into two halves: the left side is entirely white, while the right side is completely black. This physical duality mirrors a split personality, with the black half speaking in Katakana and the white half using Kanji and Kana in the Japanese manga. In the English adaptation, these two sides are voiced by different actors and engage in internal conversations, often disagreeing on matters. The black half tends to be serious and intelligent, whereas the white half is carefree and easygoing, and they appear to communicate with one another telepathically. Completing his carnivorous plant theme, Zetsu is a cannibal. Despite his unsettling nature, Zetsu appears highly trustworthy, having been entrusted with the identities of Pain and Tobi. He has been working alongside Tobi for a considerable time, with Tobi initially presenting himself as Zetsu’s subordinate. Zetsu has noted that Tobi’s plans have been in motion for a long period. Within the Akatsuki, Zetsu primarily serves as a spy and often acts as a hunter-nin. He possesses the unique ability to move his body and participate in the tailed beasts sealing ritual simultaneously, allowing him to keep watch while the ritual occurs. When an Akatsuki agent or member dies, Zetsu is dispatched to devour their remains to prevent secrets from being revealed, and he is also responsible for retrieving the rings from deceased members. Because of this specific role, he is the only Akatsuki member who regularly operates without a partner. Although he functions independently, Zetsu holds a position of authority, with other members often reporting directly to him rather than to the group’s actual leader, Pain.
