Queen Beryl

Summary

Queen Beryl serves as the primary antagonist in every iteration of the Sailor Moon franchise, a name derived from the mineral beryl. Although she possesses immense magical power, she primarily utilizes it to channel life energy harvested by her minions into Queen Metaria. In the manga, her origins trace back to the Silver Millennium, where she was a beautiful Earth girl deeply in love with Prince Endymion. Her affection was unrequited, and discovering Endymion with Princess Serenity of the Moon left her heartbroken. She later claimed that possessing Endymion was her sole motivation for allying with Queen Metaria, the evil force from the sun. Corrupted and empowered by Metaria, Beryl led Earth in a war against the Moon Kingdom. She killed Prince Endymion while he attempted to protect Princess Serenity, driving the princess to suicide. Eventually, Sailor Venus defeated Beryl with the Holy Moon Sword. A weakened Queen Serenity then sealed away Metaria and, before dying, sent the entire Kingdom to be reincarnated on Earth. Beryl is described as "reborn" when the Senshi encounter her in the twentieth century. As Queen of the Dark Kingdom, she communicated with Queen Metaria and commanded her reincarnated generals—Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite—to locate the Silver Crystal and defeat the newly awakened Sailor Soldiers. Her plan ultimately failed, and she was killed once more by Sailor Venus, who drove a sword through her body. As she fell, she whispered Endymion’s name, murmuring that she had always merely been watching him. In the anime, Queen Beryl orchestrates attacks on Tokyo’s citizens while Sailor Moon and the other Sailor Soldiers search for the Moon Princess. She kidnaps and brainwashes Prince Endymion to force him to kill his lover. When he breaks free and attacks her, she feigns a swoon and begs Queen Metaria for greater power, becoming Metaria’s vessel for Earth’s destruction. She is vaporized alongside Metaria when Sailor Moon, transformed into Princess Serenity, combines the Silver Crystal’s power with the Moon Stick. The manga portrays her with more tragedy, including a brief moment of regret as she realizes she cannot return. In the English-dubbed anime, her origin is omitted; she is simply the ruler of the Negaverse, an evil alternate dimension from which she escaped to attack. At the season’s end, Sailor Moon’s victory results in Beryl being banished back to the Negaverse.
