Izumi, Soujirou

Summary

Sōjirō Izumi is the father of Konata Izumi and a home-based author who favors loose traditional Japanese attire for his daily wear. His passion for anime and video games significantly shaped his daughter’s own interests. Described as a lolicon, he possesses an appreciation for neoteny, a trait that likely contributed to his attraction to and eventual marriage with Kanata. He clarifies that while he likes girls in a conventional manner, he also finds younger women appealing, though this preference is secondary and does not indicate a pedophilic nature. Despite this, the series features running jokes and news reports suggesting he is the strange man approaching young girls, a notion reinforced by scenes of him spying on schoolgirls from behind a lamppost. Physically, Sōjirō is very thin with thick eyebrows, unshaven facial hair, and a mole under his left eye, which Konata inherited. He suffers from pollen allergies, leading him to wear goggles and masks, a look Konata notes makes him appear even weirder. She often warns him not to engage in behavior that would get him arrested by the police. Additionally, he has a habit of forgetting to lock the bathroom door, which once shocked Yutaka. Sōjirō retains a deep love for his late wife, Kanata Izumi, who died many years prior. When Konata jokingly asks why Kanata chose him despite his erotic personality, Sōjirō explains that they simply looked past outward appearances. Kanata loved him for who he was despite his otaku tendencies, and he accepted her unusual physique and lack of shared hobbies without issue.
