Summary
Varaharu, referred to as "The Monster" in the Saiyuuki Reload Gunlock anime, is a youkai that has possessed Hazel for half his life. Hazel remained unaware of this possession, yet he derived his ability to move and exchange souls from Varaharu. In the anime, Varaharu’s name was never explicitly revealed, with the character simply known by his moniker. The youkai originated from a childhood encounter where it chased Hazel, who attempted to kill it. Due to his trauma over parents killed by monsters, Hazel’s hatred triggered the youkai to curse him by entering his body. This event led to a berserk state where Hazel killed his master, Filbert Grouse. As Filbert died, he urged Hazel to release his hatred and seek someone who could understand him. Years later, upon meeting Gat, Varaharu seized control, causing Hazel to transform into a monster again. Gat ended up killing the transformed Hazel. As Gat closed Hazel’s eyes, he witnessed the host’s sad memories and requested the spirit grant its soul to Hazel to revive him. Once revived, the spirit sealed away both Hazel’s past memories and the monster, a seal that held only as long as the spirit remained alive. After the spirit’s death, the seal broke, allowing the monster within Hazel to emerge once more.
