Summary
Lyserg Diethel is a British shaman and traditional dowser born on May 17, 1986, under the Taurus sign with AB blood type. His parents were murdered by Hao when he was six years old, an event that deeply traumatized him and shaped his psyche. While his father, Liam Diethel, had hoped he would become a detective, Lyserg’s dream is to avenge his parents by killing Hao while also achieving his father’s ambition of becoming a great detective. He is widely regarded as the most intelligent of the five shamans, though his emotional stability suffers in parent-child situations. Despite possessing a generally kind heart, he often acts as an anti-hero, driven by a passionate hatred for Hao that causes him to snap at the mere mention or sight of his enemy. Lyserg is so strikingly beautiful that Ryu once mistook him for a girl. In the English dub, his name is pronounced differently to avoid referencing lysergic acid diethylamide, and his spirit, known as Morphine in Japanese, is called Morphea in the manga and Chloe in the anime. Initially, Lyserg attacks Yoh’s group to test their strength, hospitalizing Ren and Horohoro with a single strike. After Yoh helps calm him, he joins them on their journey to find the Patch Village. Although he travels with the main characters for a significant portion of the series, he frequently fights against Yoh’s team, particularly during the pre-X-Laws era.
