Summary
Carlo Alberto, the monarch of Sardinia and father of the future King of Italy, secured a victory against the Austrians at the Battle of Custoza. During the conflict, his life was spared by Viscount Vittorio Martini, who served as a young army officer at the time. To commemorate Vittorio’s bravery, Carlo Alberto bestowed upon him a medal featuring a carved mark of benediction.
