Summary
No Face is a peculiar spirit who develops an interest in Chihiro, whom she allows into the bathhouse through a side entrance. Initially, he appears as a strange, masked wraith cloaked in mystery, simply breathing and smiling. A lonely entity, No Face sustains himself by absorbing the emotions of those around him, especially how they react to his gifts. He treats Chihiro kindly because she showed him kindness, but his nature shifts when he observes the bathhouse staff’s greed. After attempting to win their favor with gold, he is corrupted by their avarice, transforming into a grotesque monster that devours large amounts of food and several staff members. Once he departs the bathhouse’s corrupting influence, he calms down and returns to his original form. In the end, he remains with Zeniba as her helper. His mask, manner of movement, and name draw strong parallels to Japanese Noh theater. Additionally, he mimics the voices and personalities of those he consumes.
