Summary
Claudia Hortensia was the late spouse of Kirei Kotomine and the mother of Caren Hortensia. A woman suffering from a terminal illness with only a few years remaining, she became the subject of Kirei’s desperate attempt to overcome his innate evil nature. Believing that intimacy with a woman might be his final chance to achieve normalcy, he sought the ordinary happiness of love and family despite having no genuine interest in such things, ultimately choosing a partner with no future. Claudia came to love him and gave birth to their daughter, Caren. Although Kirei attempted to reciprocate her affection, he found joy in their shared suffering and despair. Aware of his twisted mentality, Claudia tried to save him, which only intensified his desire to witness her grief. Kirei recognized her sincere intentions to rescue him, yet he despaired at the realization that not even she could fill the void within him.
