Tomie

Summary

Tomie revels in the power her beauty wields over men, actively seeking to seduce them without forming any emotional bonds. Once a man ceases to be useful, she discards him, a habit that has ironically contributed to her own demise on multiple occasions. She is intensely jealous of other women and will exploit any opportunity to dismantle existing couples. Driven by extreme self-centeredness, she manipulates others for her own amusement with little regard for their well-being. Her origins remain a mystery, including her family name, and it is unclear how she acquired her abilities or if she possessed them before 1986. Witnesses recall her aging normally up to that point, appearing as a standard but exceptionally attractive and flirtatious student. The incident that changed everything occurred during a school field trip to Inariyawa, a nearby mountain. Tomie was pressuring a teacher she was sleeping with to leave his wife and marry her when a male classmate, who had become obsessed with her, confronted her. After she taunted him, a scuffle ensued, causing Tomie to fall over a cliff. Believing her dead, the teacher and several male classmates dismembered her body to cover up the accident, a gruesome task complicated by the fact that she was not entirely dead. They then scattered the body parts to hide them. Some remains were discovered, identified as Tomie’s, and cremated. Her death was attributed to a psychopath, and a funeral was held. The shock was immense when Tomie returned to class the following day as if nothing had happened. Her reappearance drove susceptible classmates into madness. When two of them attempted to report the situation to the police, the rest of the group turned violent to stop them. Tomie vanished shortly after this event. She subsequently appeared in various locations across Japan, inciting passion and murder among men. Although she died several more times, she always returned to life. Due to the police’s refusal to believe these accounts, no serious efforts were made to capture her until 1995.
