de Jarjayes, Oscar François

Summary

Born on December 25, 1755, Oscar François de Jarjayes is the youngest of five daughters of General François Augustin Regnier de Jarjayes, Commander of the Royal Guards. Her father raised her as a boy to eventually inherit his command of the Royal Guards at Court upon his retirement. By age fourteen, once her basic military training was complete, she was assigned to protect the Dauphine Marie Antoinette upon her arrival at the French Court. Although she wears men’s clothing and was raised with masculine expectations, Oscar openly acknowledges her female identity. She leverages her male persona to access freedoms unavailable to typical court ladies. Oscar serves as the love interest of both her servant, André Grandier, who later becomes a soldier in her regiment, and Marie Antoinette, whom she guards. She also gains the affection of Rosalie Lamorlière, reciprocating by calling her her "spring breeze," while other women remain infatuated with her despite knowing her true gender. Though she despises court intrigues, she stays due to her loyalty to her father and Marie Antoinette. At one point, Oscar falls in love with Fersen, who harbors forbidden feelings for Marie Antoinette.
