J. C. Ashenbert, Edgar
Summary
Edgar is a flirtatious man in his early twenties distinguished by his unique ash mauve eyes. His traumatic past began when his parents were murdered, leading to him being cast onto the streets and labeled a white slave. He was subsequently framed for mass murder, forcing him to flee America. Stripped of his honorable name, Edgar sets out to find the legendary Sword of Merrow, hoping to claim the title of "Earl of the Blue Knights" and secure a fabricated sense of honor. During his quest, he captures Lydia Carlton, believing her eyes hold the key to the sword. Edgar is deeply in love with Lydia, though he is frustrated by her avoidance of his advances. He openly expresses his affection, even requesting her exclusive dance partner at his ball to prevent jealousy, and admits that her easy communication with other men, particularly Paul, makes him uneasy. Although he initially maintains other paramours after claiming engagement to Lydia, causing her distrust, he later resolves to be truly faithful. Edgar is severely possessive, with Lydia noting that he cannot tolerate anyone taking what belongs to him. This extends to his jealousy of men interested in or friendly with Lydia. For instance, he commands Raven to forget seeing Lydia in a revealing Arabic costume. It is revealed that Edgar was the heir to a dukedom before his family’s death. He was captured by an organization led by a mysterious figure known as the Prince, who groomed him as a successor. Edgar learned to ruthlessly manipulate those around him, skills he later used to escape with Ermine, Raven, and other supporters. He often worries that he is becoming like the Prince by employing these tactics for survival. Initially driven by revenge against the Prince for his family’s murder, Edgar cared little for his own life. However, after the Ashenbert family’s banshee saved him at the cost of her life and entrusted him with the key to the land of Ibrazel, his perspective shifted. He tells Lydia that as the current Blue Knight Earl, he must persevere and defeat the Prince as part of his duty, even without the ability to see fairies. Consequently, he vows to no longer treat his own life with such disregard.
